Zephyr Field / Shrine on Airline

Good forFamiliesHistory buffs

The ballpark opened in 1997 in Metairie with 10,000 seats and an unofficial name that would outlast the official one. The public address announcer called it the Shrine on Airline from the start, but the stadium didn't make it official until 2017, when the New Orleans Zephyrs became the Baby Cakes and the nickname finally went on the door. By then, minor league baseball in New Orleans had two seasons left — the Baby Cakes relocated to Wichita at the end of 2019.

The first regular season game was April 11, 1997: the Zephyrs beat the Oklahoma City 89ers 8–3. The largest crowd in stadium history for a Zephyrs game came on July 3, 2003 — 11,925 people watched the Zephyrs lose 1–0 to the Nashville Sounds. The stadium hosted the 1999 Triple-A All-Star Game, where the Pacific Coast League beat the International League 9–5.

Hurricane Katrina damaged the ballpark. In the storm's aftermath, the Louisiana Army National Guard and FEMA used it as a rescue facility. In 2006, the state approved $21 million for recovery — funds that also covered the New Orleans Saints' training facility behind the ballpark and the New Orleans Arena. The Zephyrs added an extra $5 million for amenities including 16 luxury suites, a swimming pool, two hot tubs, the Coors Light Party Shack, and the Metairie Bank Home Run Porch. Tulane played its home games here during the 2006 and 2007 seasons while Hurricane Katrina delayed the rebuild of its on-campus field.

Concessions feature fried catfish, muffulettas, po' boys, jambalaya, pigskin nachos, boudin, and crawfish alongside traditional ballpark fare. The grass berm seating area beyond center field is called the Levee and is the highest point in Metairie. The field dimensions are 330 feet to left and right, 400 feet to center, installed prior to the 2008 season. The ballpark traditionally allowed some of the fewest home runs in the Pacific Coast League.
