Hunter House – Newport

National Historic Landmark
Good forArts & culture lovers

The front door of Hunter House carries a pineapple at its center — the colonial symbol of hospitality, carved into the broken-arch pediment that frames the entrance. The house dates to around 1748, one of Newport's finest examples of Georgian Colonial architecture, built when the city was a wealthy port and a center of the slave trade. The people who lived here included wealthy merchants and the people of African descent whom they enslaved — both histories belong to the building.
