Elmer's Island Wildlife Refuge

Good forOutdoor lovers

Across Caminada Pass from Grand Isle, Elmer's Island is a state-owned barrier island that was closed to the public for years before reopening as a wildlife refuge. The restored coastal dunes and saltwater marsh now host 215 documented bird species — piping plovers, red knots, black skimmers, and magnificent frigatebirds among them. It is one of the best birding sites on the Gulf Coast and one of the few places in Louisiana where you can walk a beach that isn't developed and isn't going to be.
