AMARG Aircraft Boneyard

The desert outside Tucson does the work no hangar ever could. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base holds the largest aircraft boneyard in the world — the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group — where low humidity, minimal rainfall, and hard alkaline soil keep decommissioned military aircraft intact for cannibalization or possible return to service. The place has operated this way since the end of World War II. You can't walk the flight line, but you can see it from above.
