Park Loop Road

Twenty-seven miles of road took 37 years to finish. Completed in 1958 under the guidance of John D. Rockefeller Jr., the Park Loop Road circles the eastern side of Mount Desert Island in a mostly one-way, clockwise direction — connecting lakes, mountains, and shoreline from Bar Harbor down to Seal Harbor. Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain: all of it runs off this single road. Start at Hulls Cove and follow the signs. The road does the rest.
