Fort Meade Museum and Historic Area

The 7th Cavalry Regiment established this post in 1878 at the edge of the Black Hills near Sturgis. Several original officers' quarters and the commandant's residence survive. The museum interprets the post's role in the Indian Wars period — a chapter of Black Hills history that followed the federal government's forced removal of the Lakota after the Great Sioux War of 1876.
