Burlington Northern sold the line for $10 in 1987. That's not a typo. The railroad that once ran from Leadville to Denver — established in 1884, converted to standard gauge during World War II to haul freight out of the Climax mine — had outlived its industrial purpose. Ken Olsen bought it, and in 1988 it reopened as a tourist railroad. It has run out of Leadville every season since, climbing through the Rockies at 10,152 feet.
