Tor House and Hawk Tower (Robinson Jeffers)

National Historic Landmark
Good forHistory buffs

Robinson Jeffers bought property at Carmel Point in spring 1919, contracted a stonemason to build a granite cottage, and signed on himself as apprentice to learn the work. The house was complete by mid-August. Then he built Hawk Tower alone — starting in 1920, finishing in 1924 — dragging boulders up from the beach using wooden planks and a block and tackle. It was during that four years of stonework, the brief suggests, that Jeffers found his voice as a poet. The Tor House Foundation has run the property as a museum since 1978.
