Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

Every October, monarch butterflies migrate up to 2,000 miles — some from as far as Canada — to cluster in this three-acre grove of eucalyptus and pine trees in Pacific Grove. Up to 25,000 butterflies arrive at peak season, hanging in the branches from late October through mid-February. Admission is free. Docents are on-site daily through the winter months. The city enforces a $1,000 fine for interfering with the butterflies. Go on a sunny afternoon when the temperature clears 55°F — that's when they fly.
