Marble House

National Historic Landmark
Good forArts & culture lovers

The name on the deed was Vanderbilt. Built in 1892 for William Kissam Vanderbilt and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, Marble House earned its name honestly — the interior is clad in 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Later, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont turned the place into a platform for suffragist rallies. A summer cottage, by Newport standards. A National Historic Landmark by any other measure.
