Piragua Stands, Old San Juan

The word itself tells you what it is: *pirámide* plus *agua* — pyramid of water. A piragüero shaves ice from a solid block, shapes it into a cone, and pours fruit-flavored syrup over it. Flavors run from coconut and pineapple to anise and sugarcane syrup. The vendors work from small, traditionally brightly colored pushcarts, and they only come out on hot, sunny days — which in Old San Juan means most of the year. Find one. It costs almost nothing and tastes exactly like where you are.
