The Civilian Conservation Corps built this park during the Depression to save a piece of Hill Country for people who had nothing — and what they built has outlasted everything. Garner opened in 1941 on 1,774 acres along the Frio River near Concan, named for Vice President John Nance Garner, who lived and practiced law in the area. Since the 1940s, people have gathered here on summer evenings to dance to jukebox music — a tradition that has never stopped. The park consistently ranks among the most sought-after in the Texas state system. Reservations are required; plan accordingly.
