Mount Desert Oceanarium

Southwest Harbor residents David and Audrey Mills founded the Oceanarium in 1972, opening it first inside their own home before moving to its current seaside location overlooking Thomas Bay. The working lobster hatchery raises larval lobsters through multiple stages before releasing them into coastal waters. Visitors can handle sea creatures at a discovery pool and walk a guided salt marsh trail.
