Somesville Historic District

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffs

Abraham Somes arrived in 1761 at the request of the Massachusetts governor to establish mills, and the village that took his name became the oldest European settlement on Mount Desert Island. The entire village is now a National Register Historic District, listed in 1975, running along Main Street from Denning Brook to Route 3 and encompassing the harbor shoreline. The district includes the 1828 Isaac Somes House and the 1852 Union Church — the oldest and among the earliest buildings still standing in the village.
