Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Good forOutdoor lovers

The volcano beneath your feet never stopped. Designated in November 1990 within the Deschutes National Forest, Newberry National Volcanic Monument covers more than 54,000 acres of lava flows, alpine lakes, and geologic features — built around a shield volcano that remains seismically and geothermally active to this day. The caldera holds two lakes and a field of obsidian created 1,300 years ago. Lava River Cave, the largest uncollapsed lava tube in Oregon, runs cold at 42 degrees year-round. Paulina Peak tops out at 7,985 feet.
