Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

The highway here follows an old railroad grade abandoned after massive flooding in 1933. That history is underfoot as US-14A winds through Spearfish Canyon — a narrow gorge carved by Spearfish Creek in Lawrence County, running roughly 20 miles from Spearfish south to Cheyenne Crossing. Limestone cliffs define the skyline; three waterfalls — Bridal Veil, Roughlock, and Spearfish Falls — pull people out of their cars. No entrance fee. Late September into early October, the canyon's deciduous trees turn gold, and the crowds arrive to prove it.
