Roughlock Falls

Good forOutdoor lovers

Pioneers descending Spearfish Canyon used to roughlock their wagon wheels — chaining them to prevent free rolling down the drop — and the falls took the name. Today the multi-tiered waterfall runs along Little Spearfish Creek within Spearfish Canyon, managed by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks inside the Black Hills National Forest. The trail is two miles round-trip, rated easy. Birdwatchers come specifically for the American dipper, a bird that walks and swims underwater — one of the few places in the Black Hills to find one.
