Raymond Moore converted a Unitarian meetinghouse into a theater in 1927, and what he built has never really stopped. The Cape Playhouse is often considered the longest continuously operating summer theater in America — pausing only for a three-year break during World War II and a single season lost to COVID-19. A young Bette Davis worked here as an usher. The first production starred Basil Rathbone.
