Thoreau's Outer Beach (Great Beach Walk, Wellfleet to Provincetown)

Thoreau walked this Atlantic-facing shore four times between 1849 and 1857 — Wellfleet to Provincetown, the full length of the Outer Beach — and the book he made from those walks, *Cape Cod*, published in 1865, became the defining literary portrait of this coastline. The beach hasn't asked permission to change since he was here. That's the whole point of coming.
