Ridges Sanctuary

National Register of Historic Places
Good forOutdoor lovers

About 30 narrow, crescent-shaped sandy ridges run through this 1,600-acre preserve near Baileys Harbor — each one a former Lake Michigan beach line, formed over centuries as water levels shifted. The Ridges Sanctuary was founded in 1937, Wisconsin's first land trust, and holds 25 native orchid species alongside boreal plant communities rare this far south. Trails run dawn to dusk. The Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center, opened in 2015, is LEED certified. This is working conservation, not scenery.
