Good forHistory buffs
Between 1939 and 1947, Donald and Winifred Boynton handcrafted a stave church on their Lake Michigan shoreline property in Door County, carving its furnishings and painting 41 frescoes inside. They bequeathed the whole 441-acre estate to Lawrence University in 1963. Fire took the main lodge in 1993; a new one opened in 1996. A 2016 conservation easement permanently protects 305 of those acres — boreal forest growing well south of its usual range — from development. The chapel still hosts weddings. The seminars still run.
