Cape Flattery

Good forOutdoor lovers

James Cook named this cape in 1778, making it the oldest non-Native permanently named feature in Washington state — and the name came from disappointment. The opening he spotted "flattered" him with hope of a harbor that wasn't there. The cape is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States, on Makah land, reached by a 0.75-mile trail from a trailhead near Neah Bay. A recreation permit from the Makah Tribe is required to park. Tatoosh Island sits just offshore. The trail is open year-round.
