Lightner Museum (Hotel Alcazar)

National Register of Historic Places
Good forFamilies

Henry Flagler built the Hotel Alcazar for wealthy winter tourists riding his railroad south — a Gilded Age resort with the world's largest indoor swimming pool, a three-story ballroom, steam rooms, and sulfur baths. The Depression closed it in 1932. Chicago publisher Otto C. Lightner bought the building in 1947, filled it with his collections, and turned it over to the city of St. Augustine. The museum opened in 1948. The pool, now drained, hosts the Café Alcazar.
