Skeleton Cave

The name explains itself: when settlers first documented this lava tube around 1924, the cave had been collecting the dead for millennia. Animals fell through a skylight opening and couldn't escape. Pleistocene horse, bear, elk, dire wolf, arctic fox — the bones accumulated in the dark. The cave sits on the northern flank of Newberry Volcano, between 75,000 and 400,000 years old, running 3,560 feet by the most complete survey. Access is restricted; Wanderlust Tours holds the permit.
