Old Indian Meetinghouse, Mashpee

The sign out front says 1684. A local historian spent two decades in archives from Boston to Oxford challenging that date, arguing the building was constructed roughly 75 years later at its current site near Route 28 — that the move across town credited in conventional accounts never happened. The dispute is unresolved. What isn't: this is the Mashpee Wampanoag's oldest surviving church, administered today by the tribe's Historic Preservation Department, and it endured a long restoration from near ruin before reopening.
