Heritage Museums and Gardens

Good forFamilies

The grounds here were shaped before the museum existed. Charles O. Dexter spent decades hybridizing rhododendrons on this Sandwich, Massachusetts property, developing thousands of seedlings annually between 1921 and 1943. In 1969, Josiah K. Lilly III acquired the estate and opened Heritage Plantation of Sandwich on the site. The collection now includes 125 of the 145 known Dexter cultivars, a 1908 Looff Carousel originally made for an amusement park in Meridian, Mississippi, and an automobile collection that includes President William Howard Taft's White Motor Company Steam Car.
