Big Sur Coast Highway (CA-1, Big Sur Segment)

Dr. John Roberts rode his horse-drawn cart three and a half hours to reach shipwreck survivors near Point Sur in 1894 — and came away convinced a coastal road had to be built. It took 18 years of construction, prison labor, and Depression-era federal money to prove him right. The 71-mile stretch of Highway 1 between Malpaso Creek and San Carpóforo Creek opened in 1937, became a designated All-American Road in 1996, and has been closed by landslides dozens of times since — most recently reopening fully in January 2026.
