Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

National Register of Historic Places

The congregation began in 1565, when Spanish settlers established a Catholic parish at the founding of St. Augustine — making it the oldest Christian congregation in the contiguous United States. The current coquina structure was built between 1793 and 1797, became a cathedral in 1870, and was designated a minor basilica in 1976. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Mass is still held here. The building endures.
