Founded in 1866 by freedmen on land that bordered orange grove plantations, Lincolnville became the center of civil rights activism in St. Augustine a century later. In 1964, local activists appealed for outside help, and Rev. King came. Hundreds were arrested; the struggle brought national attention and contributed directly to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, originally recording 548 contributing buildings — though demolitions since have reduced that number considerably.
