Huguenot Cemetery

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffs

Florida became American territory in 1821, and the first thing the new administration needed was somewhere to bury its dead. The Tolomato Cemetery, the only burial ground in St. Augustine, was reserved for Catholics. So an area just outside the city gate became the first public Protestant cemetery in Florida — opened the same year a yellow fever epidemic swept through the city. Memorial Presbyterian Church acquired it in 1832 and operated it until 1884. The cemetery is believed to hold at least 436 burials. It can be viewed through the fence any day of the year.
