In 1761, Abraham Somes founded the first European settlement on Mount Desert Island — and the glacially carved waterway bearing his name has been quietly bisecting the island ever since. Technically a fjard, not a true fjord, Somes Sound is nonetheless the only naturally occurring example of its kind on the East Coast of the United States, reaching depths of approximately 175 feet.
