Charles Kenneth Savage built this 2.3-acre Japanese stroll garden in Northeast Harbor in 1956, drawing much of its initial plant collection from Beatrix Farrand's Reef Point Estate in Bar Harbor. John D. Rockefeller Jr. helped finance the move. Fine-gravel paths are raked to suggest flowing water; a sand garden repeats the effect with stones meant to represent islands. The garden is open May through October, and the weeping hemlock just north of the main bridge came directly from Reef Point.
