Built in 1883 by A.C. Savage, who correctly predicted that Bar Harbor's overflow of vacationers would benefit Northeast Harbor, the inn burned down sixteen years later and was rebuilt — reopening in 1901 with architecture by Savage's son Frederick. The Savage family ran it for generations, with the women establishing its reputation for hearty New England food. Ownership passed out of the family in 1965. A $28 million renovation, begun in early 2024, is scheduled to reopen the property in June 2025.
