Acadia Mountain Trail and Somes Sound Overlook

Acadia Mountain Trail climbs the western side of Mount Desert Island to 681 feet, delivering the closest aerial views down the length of Somes Sound — a fjard carved by glaciers that nearly divides the island in half. The Wabanaki camped along these shores for thousands of years; Abraham Somes, for whom the sound is named, established the first European village on Mount Desert Island in 1761.
