Whitefish Dunes State Park

The dunes were here long before anyone called it a park. Whitefish Dunes State Park preserves the most substantial sand dunes on Lake Michigan's western shore across 867 acres of the Door Peninsula's eastern edge. Beneath them, the remains of eight successive prehistoric Native American villages — occupied in overlapping waves from 100 B.C. through the later 1800s — sit on the National Register of Historic Places. The tallest, Old Baldy, rises 93 feet and looks west to Clark Lake and east to the lake that built it.
