A hurricane unmade the ground in 1975, and what it exposed had been waiting since 25 AD. Floodwaters from Hurricane Eloise stripped away topsoil outside Ponce and revealed the oldest ceremonial and sports complex yet uncovered in Puerto Rico — ball courts, ceremonial plazas, and 186 burials, most of them Igneri, a pre-Taíno people who built here and then disappeared. The museum opened in 1982. The site is still being excavated. What's already here is the largest Indigenous cemetery in the region.
