Iglesia Catedral Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Ponce

National Register of Historic Places

Every city in the Spanish Caribbean has its cathedral, but few have one planted directly in the town square itself. Ponce's cathedral — tracing its origins to 1670, designated a parish by royal decree in 1692 — stands at the center of Plaza Las Delicias, its pale blue and gray neoclassical facade splitting the square into two smaller plazas. Damaged repeatedly by fires and earthquakes, rebuilt between 1931 and 1937 to a design by Francisco Porrata Doria, it is still a working parish, still the seat of the Diocese of Ponce.
