Henry Flagler paid St. Johns County $10,000 to relocate their jail — he needed the land for his Ponce de León Hotel. What went up in 1891 housed prisoners until 1953, when the county moved to a newer facility. Eight men were hanged from the gallows here. The building, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987, still stands at 167 San Marco Avenue, guided tours running through the cells, the gallows, and the sheriff's adjacent family quarters.
